Port has been produced in Portugal for the English market for around 400 years. Because wines from Portugal did not always have sufficient shelf life to survive the sea voyage to England, solutions were sought. Initially, brandy was added to the wine. Later, the final product, port, was developed by stopping the fermentation of the wine by adding wine alcohol. This allows the wine that serves as the basis for port to retain residual sweetness from unfermented sugars. There are different types of red port: ruby (young ruby red), tawny (older, brownish red), pale tawny (old, brownish). Port with vintage: Vintage, late-bottled vintage, colheita (light red). There is also white port and, more recently, even rose port.
